Action Learning, a component of IHRDC's widely used IPIMS e-learning system, simulates on-the-job training through a series of interactive learning plans that are built around industry-defined performance competencies, virtual job assignments, actual field data and realistic work situations. This "Learning by Doing" approach combines the flexibility of e-Learning with a level of student-to-student and student-to-mentor interaction that is normally seen only in a classroom.
Action Learning is now available to IPIMS licensees worldwide at www.ipims.com. It is also an integral part of the Certificate Programs in Oil and Gas Management and the Master of Engineering Degree Program being offered by the Pennsylvania State University in partnership with IHRDC at www.ihrdcOnline.com.
Technology Focus
IHRDC’s Action Learning system is built around Learning Plans that
allow individuals and teams to develop their competencies in key areas of E&P
technology. The first set of Learning Plans concentrates on Integrated Reservoir
Management. These eleven Learning Plans enable individuals to build performance
competencies in six major areas:
- Reservoir Engineering;
- Drilling, Well Completion and Workover Fundamentals;
- Production Engineering and Operations;
- Integrated Reservoir Studies;
- Reservoir Surveillance; and
- Reservoir Management and Exploitation Strategies.
Competency Building (“Learning by Doing”)
Learners develop competencies by completing an integrated progression of
challenging assignments, using actual field data provided by Petroleos de Venezuela
(PDVSA). The assignments take learners through the complex tasks involved in
discovering, evaluating, developing and producing an actual hydrocarbon reservoir.
To successfully complete the assignments, learners must:
- demonstrate competency levels that correspond to the performance standards
of today’s international petroleum industry;
- be able to work as contributing members of multidisciplinary project teams, and;
- play substantive, positive roles in developing and implementing successful
reservoir management strategies.
System Details
The Internet/Intranet delivery system includes full registration, assessment,
mentoring, recording and reporting features. During the learning process, users complete substantial sets of simulated assignments in order to demonstrate job competency. Pre-selected Background Knowledge is available as needed to support the learning. The performance of each learner is measured and recorded in his or her personal record. Company administrators and mentors (IHRDC mentors if necessary) design the system to
meet individual needs.
Pilot Tested System
PDVSA, as part of a development alliance with IHRDC, has successfully pilot
tested the system with 50 learners at three different locations. The learners,
mentors and administrators have made valuable contributions to the design of the
system and have expressed very high praise for both its content and functionality. Licensing Available on a Per-Seat Basis
IHRDC’s Action Learning is offered on a “per seat” basis at about
one-third the cost of comparable short courses. IHRDC, as necessary, will provide
virtual mentors and in-house workshops to assist companies in successfully
implementing the system.
